This course will introduce the basics of designing and developing data visualizations. Data visualization is a proven way to engage with, explore, and contextualize large amounts of information critical to our decision-making. Through a series of lectures and practical activities in Python, you will learn about different types of data, user goals, and a “grammar” of visualization that will help you create and analyze data visualizations. You will also learn about interactivity that makes it easier to explore your data. Utimately, knowledge of these building blocks will enable you to produce effective and purposeful visual data representations.

At the end of the course, the learner will be able to:
– have an understading of the basic principles of visualization theory and techniques across different major data domains
– have knowledge of human graphical perception and its relations to visualization design
– have an overview of methods to visually encode and interact with data
– have gained practical experience in building basic visualizations of data for analysis and communication
– critically evaluate and discuss visualizations
– recognize and can critically discuss the role and importance of visualization in contemporary society
– explain “visualization literacy”
None.
We recommend having previous experience in programming and algorithmic thinking and data or data structures. While success in the course is possible without programming experience, the learner should expect to put in extra time and effort to master the assignments.
Four modules with asynchronous lecture videos on Panopto Video, along with a portfolio-style assessment: 4 quizzes based on lectures and one final programming assignment. The students have to submit and pass all portfolio components to get an overall pass.
The course runs from Week 3-8 (jan 18-feb 26)
