Transdisciplinary research

Common Science Agenda

There is a wealth of synergies and opportunities across the CHARM-EU partner universities. The Common Science Agenda consolidates a list of research challenges common to some of the partner universities and which fall under CHARM-EUs Thematic Areas and are linked to the UN SDGs.

Summer School in Transdisciplinarity

Trainings for doctoral researchers from all fields are organised in CHARM-EU to provide skills in transdisciplinarity, working on real-life challenges with stakeholders and experts.

2026 Summer School at AAU (Turku, Finland)

Held in June 2026, the session included a pitch session where all the participants presented their transdisciplinary projects prepared during the summer school. Find out more about the pitch grand finale here.

2025 Summer School at UM (Montpellier, France).

Held in June 2025. See here for the results and the information leaflet on how to develop proposals for transdisciplinary and sustainable research projects addressing real-world problems that were developed during the training.

Networking and matchmaking actions

CHARM-EU fosters collaboration and knowledge exchange across its community of researchers. Its networking and matchmaking initiatives connect individuals and teams working on interdisciplinary projects aligned with the alliance’s thematic areas and the UN SDGs. Introducing researchers with shared interests and complementary expertise promotes innovation, enhances research impact, and accelerates progress on key societal challenges.

Building Multidisciplinary Research Proposals: A Co-Creation Workshop to Address the Water Global Challenges

The 2023 CHARM-EU R&I Days brought together a group of diverse-background researchers from the Alliance partner universities and external stakeholders to focus minds on specific global challenges and enable transdisciplinary responses.

During three intensive co-creation workshop sessions, researchers were presented with different European funding opportunities for water-related research proposals and will engage in a collaborative group dynamic that allows to start working together in developing research proposals that address the Water Global Challenges.

Co-organisers

The CHARM-EU R&I Days: Building Multidisciplinary Research Proposals: A Co-Creation Workshop to Address the Water Global Challenges is co-organised with the UB Water Research Institute (IdRA) and the UNESCO Center on Water (Montpellier).

Applied Data Science Days 2024

The amount of data in the world is growing exponentially. This creates a growing need to use this data effectively, safely, and ethically, and for important purposes, such as: How can you use social media data to detect the emergence of extremist behavior? How can you predict environmental conditions using camera data?

As a transdisciplinary field, Applied Data Science can be leveraged to meet societal challenges.

Utrecht University is hosting the Applied Data Science Days on 15 & 16 May 2024. A challenge based networking event. The aim of this event is to connect and collaborate between CHARM-EU partner universities and experts in the field of Applied Data Science.

Goals

With this networking event, we want to bring together academics from our CHARM-EU partners in the field of (applied) Data Science. We want to:

  • Collect problem spaces to find out the needs of society and business.
  • Find educational solutions for these problems. With our CHARM-EU partners, we use this input to discuss and find solutions, proof-of-concepts that we could develop and use in our education and research to solve the problems.

Prior to the in-person event in Utrecht, there will be an online session focused on setting the interests, challenges and goals for the two days on site in Utrecht.

When

Online Preparation Session: May 2nd on MS Teams 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

  • Societal challenges for applied data science
  • Dive into different topics in relation to applied data science initiatives, such as: lifelong learning, international collaboration and development of new study programmes.
  • Explore possibilities to collaborate in applied data science projects.

Who is it for:

The event is open to individuals with specific professional backgrounds, including International Relations Directors, Program Directors, Educationalists, and Academics specializing in applied data science (encompassing both teachers and researchers).
