The lecture and workshop on relevant methods to Education for Sustainability were led by Dr. Cicely Roche, one of the five Sustainability Fellows at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), who played a key role in developing the Irish institution’s portfolio of Education for Sustainability and related professional development programs.

TCD’s professional development module, entitled “Enacting Education for Sustainable Development,” is an interdisciplinary program developed by a team of faculty and students that offers specific methods for integrating sustainability perspectives into education. As part of the CHARM-ED EESD international educational innovation project, colleagues from ELTE and the University of Barcelona are working together – with professional support from TCD – to adapt one standalone part of the program to the local context and explore the possibility of transforming it into a microcredential course. 

University teaching staff were introduced to the background of the program during the webinar series organised as part of the CHARM-ED EESD project, while the in-person workshops – held in Barcelona and Budapest – provided participants with the opportunity to directly experience the methodology, as well as to reflect on local perspectives.

At the Budapest workshop, participants were introduced to the objectives of the CHARM-ED EESD project and discussed the concepts of sustainability and sustainable development, laying the groundwork for the practical work that followed. The central element of the event was a 2-hour interactive experiential workshop during which participants examined and reflected on their own worldviews and value systems related to sustainability challenges. The program combined various methods – small-group activities, role-playing, case studies, and guided discussions. Participants analysed their experiences from both students’ and educators’ perspectives.

In the final phase, those present brainstormed on how to incorporate these educational approaches into their own university teaching practice. To conclude the program, the organisers collected feedback on participants’ experiences through a short questionnaire.

The workshop, which aligned with the goals of ELTE’s Sustainability Flagship Program, was hosted at the “Book of Your Life” community space at the ELTE University Library and Archives. Educators from a total of four faculties – the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Education and Psychology, and the Faculty of Sciences – participated in the event and received certificates of recognition.
