The Intercultural preparation modules were planned and offered by academics in intercultural communication and similar disciplines at the CHARM-EU universities, appointed to being members of the Knowledge Creation team (KCT) for developing the course.

The Intercultural Preparation Modules contribute to enhancing the international and intercultural dimension of CHARM‑EU by preparing learners and staff to engage meaningfully with partners from third countries not associated with the Programme. By promoting intercultural competence, inclusive dialogue and mutual understanding, the modules foster active participation, civic engagement and shared European values, thereby directly supporting the Erasmus+ horizontal priority of Participation in Democratic Life.

The content of the modules:

1. In the short introductory module, you are invited to begin your intercultural journey. This one-hour video module offers an insightful overview of key intercultural themes, including: concepts of time and space, styles of communication and categorisation and stereotyping. The module is built around four core objectives:

• to develop awareness of both cultural differences and commonalities.
• to share and reflect on real-life intercultural encounters and challenges.
• to foster self-awareness around your own cultural values, norms, and beliefs.
• to enhance your ability to navigate cultural differences effectively.

2. Submodule 1: Hands-on Culture – Facing Different Perspectives and Engaging in Intercultural Exchanges. This submodule moves beyond surface-level cultural elements such as language, food, and traditions to examine the deeper layers of culture—our values, habits, and worldviews. Topics include:

• Cultural Identity
• Understanding Culture: Perspectives and Expressions
• Navigating Intercultural Exchange

3. Submodule 2: Navigating Exchange Experiences through Intercultural Communication. In this module, we explore how cultural context influences our experiences and communication during exchanges. You’ll learn how core personal values shape reactions to intercultural situations, how communication styles vary across cultures, why “culture shock” occurs during intercultural experiences, and most importantly, how to manage it. Learning objectives include:

• Understanding typical patterns and coping mechanisms in exchange experiences.
• Recognising “rich points” (a.k.a. “culture shock”) in intercultural encounters and how personal values influence them.
• Exploring alternative strategies for managing cultural challenges, including their pros and cons.
• Communicating effectively—both verbally and non-verbally—across cultural boundaries.

• The participants will get a unique chance to follow a course offered by CHARM-EU teachers;
• The participants will become aware of the CHARM-EU;
• The International Relations Offices will be able to offer the Intercultural preparation to all outgoing and incoming students in addition to the practical information given to them;
• In addition, the CHARM-EU staff members going on teacher or staff exchanges can also follow the Intercultural preparation as well as all the students who are not even planning to go on an exchange but are interested in cultural awareness and want to find out more;
• The Erasmus coordinators will be to be able to mention the Intercultural preparation in the Erasmus+ final reports;
• The developer team are also eager to explore collaborative opportunities in curriculum development, research, and innovation.
