Highlights from the CHARM-EU Master’s Hackathon 2026

The annual Hackathon for the CHARM-EU Master’s in Global Challenges for Sustainability has wrapped up after an incredibly productive, high-energy week! 35 module coordinators, professors, track coordinators and educationalists from across our partner universities gathered in the Netherlands to collaborate, innovate, and prepare a fantastic educational experience for the upcoming academic year.

This Hackathon is a space for professional development, onboarding, and curriculum design. This year’s edition brought together our CHARM-EU professors and educationalists to ensure our transdisciplinary master’s programme continues to lead the way in innovative higher education.

Crafting the Upcoming Academic Year

A major focus of the week was hands-on preparation for the new academic cycle. Participants worked to refine and enhance their respective modules, integrating recent student feedback and aligning learning objectives. Dedicated sessions were spent mapping out teaching schedules to ensure a smooth, well-coordinated experience for our next cohort of global changemakers.

Transforming Assessment and Pedagogy

Educational innovation is at the heart of CHARM-EU. During the event, the team participated in an intensive group session focused on programmatic assessment. Together, they reflected on how to evaluate student growth, discussing strategies to ensure that assessment throughout the entire Master’s programme is continuous, meaningful, and deeply integrated into the learning journey.

Beyond curriculum alignment, our educators expanded their pedagogical toolkits through a series of specialized workshops, which explored:

  • AI in Education: Navigating the role of artificial intelligence in the modern classroom.
  • Creative Assessment: Developing novel, authentic ways for students to demonstrate their knowledge.
  • Navigating Emotions in the Classroom: Equipping staff with strategies to support students dealing with complex, real-world sustainability challenges.
  • Reflective Teaching: Taking the time to look inward and optimize personal teaching practices.

Weathering the Heat and Building Connections

While the workshops and design sessions were intense, the week provided a brilliant opportunity for community-building. A sudden summer heatwave in the Netherlands served as its own unique form of team-building, proving that our international network can adapt to any challenge. More than that, experiencing such extreme weather firsthand served as a stark, real-time reminder of our mission: it underscores the critical and urgent need for innovative sustainability solutions to slow and combat climate change.

To celebrate a highly successful and productive week, the participants wrapped up the event with a beautiful, relaxing boat trip through the historic canals of Utrecht, solidifying friendships and collaborations that will carry into the new semester.

We want to give a massive thank you to all the coordinators, teachers, and staff members who brought their enthusiasm, insights, and passion to this year’s Hackathon.
