This course starts by exploring the development of tantra, and how its understanding of the bodily microcosm affected the development of hatha-yoga. The central texts on hatha-yoga, such as Hathapradipika, Gheranda Samhita and Shiva Samhita, will be explored. Continuities as well as discontinuities with modern physical yoga practice will be examined. The worldviews related to Tantra – Shaktism, Shaivism and Vaishnavism – will be explored as well.
The course prepares the student to understanding the development and scholarship on modern yoga, which typically juxtaposes contemporary practice with the pre-modern traditions.
