Programmatic assessment
Programmatic assessment (Van der Vleuten et al., 2012; Van der Vleuten, Schuwirth, Driessen, Govaerts, & Heeneman, 2015) is a new approach to assessment that focuses on optimising the learning and decision-making function. The main focus is the student’s learning. Instead of the ‘jumping through summative assessment hoops’, assessments should promote learning. This is done by disconnecting the pass/fail decision from one single assessment moment. Instead, the student is provided with meaningful and rich feedback to help them develop themselves. Ultimately, multiple moments of assessment over a longer period of time lead to a pass/fail decision.
The concept of programmatic assessment is implemented into the CHARM-EU MSc programme Global Challenges for Sustainability. Educationalists supported KCT members in an extensive way to understand and apply the principles of this assessment concept. Based on these supporting activities for KCT members, an activity plan for a programmatic assessment workshop was created to share with other Higher Education Institutions. The materials include a first introduction to programmatic assessment in the form of a one-hour interactive workshop session. The aim of this workshop is for participants to understand the programmatic assessment principles and their benefits. Next to that they will be applying the principles by practicing with rubrics for their assessment and feedback. This workshop has been tested extensively with various target groups in different activities.
Learning objectives
After this session, participants are able to:
- Explain with programmatic assessment principles and their benefits.
- Apply rubrics to their assessment and explain why this is beneficial.
