Last 12 March took place the virtual seminar “European Approach: challenges and opportunities for the Catalan universities”. The aim of this webinar is to present the European Approach in Catalan universities, based on two experiences where it has already been applied in Catalonia, including the CHARM-EU experience.

The seminar, organised by the Catalan Quality Agency (AQU), highlighted main challenges of this European approach from the point of view of an external assessment, as well as the challenges and opportunities from the Catalan universities experience that have currently assessed degrees according to this methodology. Meritxell Chaves, Alliance Manager for CHARM-EU, presented the steps in creating the first Master’s under the framework of the European Universities alliance: Global Challenges for Sustainability, including the main challenges regarding external evaluation by the quality assurance agencies from the five partner countries universities (Spain, Ireland, Netherlands, Hungary and France) and how this process was embedded in the European approach.

During the event, the AQU director, Martí Casadesús, introduced the Guide to ex-ante accreditation of joint programmes using the European approach, a tool designed for both the external committees and commissions and the study programmes in their process of proposal-making. The guide is intended both for the joint degrees, to facilitate the task of preparing the new proposal, and for the external committees that are to evaluate it. The approved methodology will be used in two joint degree verification processes involving two Catalan universities:  one in the framework of the CHARM-EU Master’s in Global Challenges for Sustainability and another regarding a Master’s in Transfusion Medicine and Advanced Cell Therapies (coordinated by the UAB and University of Leiden).
