CHARM-EU Student Reflections at the UN Regional Academy

CHARM-EU Student Reflections at the UN Regional Academy

Last year, CHARM-EU alumna Ellen Olofsson participated in the prestigious 2024/2025 Regional Academy for the United Nations (RAUN). This seven-month international programme connects UN organisations with Master’s and PhD students. She shares her experience in this article to inspire CHARM-EU students interested in the intersection of sustainability and international relations.

The RAUN programme combines expert-led lectures, interactive workshops, and practical hands-on research in cooperation with the UN and international organisations, structured around two three-day in-person conferences (the 2024/2025 edition took place in Barcelona and at the UN Headquarters in Vienna) and several online sessions between October and May.

Participation in the program is voluntary and part-time. You collaborate closely within diverse international teams, forging strong networks with peers, academics, and practitioners. The program fosters a highly rewarding environment that supports both professional and personal growth.

Why choose RAUN?

Ellen applied to RAUN due to her strong interest in global sustainability challenges and her desire to explore how international collaboration can create meaningful change in a practical setting after her Master’s. Combined with a longstanding curiosity about UN-related work and a hope to contribute to the UN’s mission, RAUN presented the ideal opportunity to deepen her understanding of the organisation and connect with professionals in the field.

I would highly recommend RAUN to Master’s and PHD students passionate about researching pressing societal issues related to sustainability and interested in gaining a deeper understanding of both the UN and their own professional goals.”

How has CHARM-EU helped prepare to work with UN agencies?

Having gained experience in diverse transdisciplinary teams and in online collaboration with individuals from varying backgrounds and countries using digital project management tools provided a strong advantage. Skills gained through CHARM-EU, including stakeholder engagement, systems thinking, and policy brief writing, offered valuable perspectives to the RAUN project. The capstone project’s consultancy format further prepared her for a similar environment with UNICEF.

“My master’s degree from CHARM-EU served as a valuable foundation for my RAUN project with UNICEF, where I, with the knowledge and experiences gained, felt comfortable in handling tasks such as project management, transdisciplinary group work, stakeholder collaborations, policy brief writing, and project presentations. I would recommend both the CHARM-EU Master’s and the RAUN program to individuals interested in international cooperation who are committed to addressing global sustainability challenges through collaborative approaches.”
