From 23 to 26 of September took place the Erasmus+ Higher Education Mobility Days organised by SEPIE – Servicio Español para la Internacionalización de la Educación and hosted by the University of Valencia, where nearly 300 representatives from educational institutions were discussing mobility, inclusion, and the future of international cooperation in higher education.

The event closed with a round table on university alliances moderated by Pastora Martínez Samper, Vice President of the European Universities Network (UEUE), coordinator of the OpenEU Alliance and Commissioner for International Action at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. Panlists were  Meritxell Chaves, coordinator of CHARM-EU Alliance, presenting FOREU4ALL; Carles Padilla, Vice-Rector for Multilingualism and Internationalisation, Universitat de València, representing FORTHEM Alliance and Núria Sempere, Director General Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya – ESMUC.

The session explored the role of European University Alliances within Erasmus+: how they are reshaping the higher education landscape, the challenges they face, and how Spain -as one of the leading countries-contributes to this transformative process.

These were some of the messages from the event:

  • A European vision beyond mobility: This initiative is not only about collaboration; it is about rethinking the future of European universities.
  • Spain as a key pleayer: Spain participates in 46 alliances, with 13 coordinators — making it the third country in Europe.
  • Collaboration over competition: Alliances promote co-creation and intercultural campuses.
  • Challenges: Structural funding, bureaucratic complexity, and proving impact remain major hurdles.
