How can we learn more systematically from our teaching? How can we generate evidence about student learning while contributing to educational innovation across Europe?

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) offers a framework for investigating questions about teaching and student learning in a systematic, evidence-informed, and scholarly way. Across Europe, related concepts are known under different names, including vitenskapelig tilnærming til undervisning, forschendes Lehren, onderzoek naar je eigen onderwijs, l’enfocament acadèmic de la docència i de l’aprenentatge, ett vetenskapligt förhåll-ningssätt till undervisning, tanítást és tanulást vizsgáló tudományosság or démarche de recherche et de réflexion sur l’enseignement et l’apprentissage.

Format: Online (Zoom)
Duration: 2 hours (+ optional follow-up activity for the Edubadge)

A promotional banner divided into two main sections. On the left, large blue text on a white background reads "SCHOLARSHIP FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING (SoTL) ACROSS CHARM-EU," followed by the event details: "30th September 2026, from 10:00 to 12:00 PM (CET) Online." A blue "Co-funded by the European Union" logo is in the bottom left corner. On the right side, there is a photograph of six people sitting in a circle chatting in an office environment, with a "CHARM-EU" logo overlaid in the top right corner.

This interactive online workshop invites academic staff from all CHARM-EU universities to discover how SoTL can support their professional development, enhance student learning, and strengthen a shared European culture of educational innovation. Whether you are new to SoTL or already exploring evidence-informed teaching, this session will provide practical tools and inspiration for your own teaching context.

During the two-hour webinar, participants will:

  • explore the foundations and purpose of SoTL;
  • identify teaching and learning questions that can be investigated systematically;
  • become familiar with common SoTL approaches and examples from CHARM-EU institutions;
  • reflect on challenges and opportunities arising from diverse disciplinary, cultural, and educational contexts;
  • develop an initial idea for a potential SoTL project related to their own teaching.

The workshop will be led by Prof. Robert Kordts (UiB), Dr. Lissette Fernandez Nuñez (UB) and Tatiana Ershova (UiB).

Goals

By the end of the session, participants will have a clearer understanding of how SoTL can help transform everyday teaching questions into opportunities for inquiry, collaboration, and educational improvement within their own institution and across the CHARM-EU alliance.

Academic staff (max. 3 per university) and educationalists from all CHARM-EU partner universities

The workshop combines short presentations, individual reflection, peer discussion, and collaborative idea development. Participants will receive a project planning template and a curated collection of resources for further exploration.

Those wishing to deepen their engagement may complete a follow-up assignment leading to an Edubadge.
