Representatives from seven of CHARM-EU’s partner institutions gathered in Turku, Finland, to explore and develop cutting-edge ideas using a Scrum-inspired methodology. Key concepts included Physical Language Labs, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Courses, and Language Tandems. These projects are not just theoretical – implementation of the first initiative is already set for February 2025, marking a significant step forward.
A Collaborative Effort
The success of these events was a collective achievement made possible by the dedication and efforts of many. The Language Centre at Åbo Akademi University acted as host, with special thanks to Mia Panisse and Pia Le Grand for their successful organization of the onsite event. Facilitators Simone Roth and Ines Müller-Vogt expertly guided the process, ensuring productive and engaging discussions.
“At the ÅAU Language Centre we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to welcome our colleagues from the CHARM-EU-alliance universities for this first face-to-face meeting in Turku. It is important to create platforms for people to meet and build bridges between different institutions” says Mia Panisse, Head of the Language Center at Åbo Akademi University.
The enthusiasm and commitment of all participants were essential in fostering collaboration and driving the initiative forward.
“For two days, we had the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from each other and shape new practical projects within the alliance. We set the foundation for our shared goals and aspirations and as we move forward, we will draw strength from the diversity of our experiences and perspectives. The meeting has marked what I believe will be a rewarding and impactful collaboration in the coming years and it has been an absolute pleasure to be part of a joint effort to shape new forms of collaborating”, says Mia Panisse.
Discussions led to tangible outcomes. Key topics included the CHARM International Language Learning Labs at partner universities, Lingua Franca Tandem Sessions for English language exchanges, and CHARM-EU’s intercultural course. A list of additional collaborative projects were compiled for further discussion.
A Bright Future Ahead
These events underline the power of partnership and innovation in transforming language education. As the CHARM-EU community continues to build on this momentum, these projects promise to pave the way for a more inclusive and effective approach to language teaching.
“What truly made the experience special was the openness and mutual camaraderie among participants. The great hospitality, coupled with the picturesque snowfall, created an atmosphere where everyone felt welcome. This sense of connection carried over into the networking lunch and dinner, fostering even deeper exchanges”, highlights Juliane Rytz, Head of Center for Language and Competency Development.
She concluded: “As the event wrapped up, we left with not only actionable plans but also a drop of melancholy — it all seemed to pass too quickly. Departing Turku was bittersweet, made harder not just by the snowy farewell but by the connections we had formed. One thing is certain: our collaboration is just beginning. We’ve already scheduled our next online follow-up in February and are excitedly planning for our next in-person meeting in November—this time in Barcelona!”
