CHARM-EU joins the global awareness-raising on International Mother Earth Day on 22 April 2023

More than ever, being conscious of all lives and the planet is crucial today. On International Mother Earth Day, CHARM-EU raises awareness to be more conscious about local and global actions and impacts and the challenges to the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports.

Earth Day 2023 Invest in our Planet!

Observed Changes and Impacts on Mother Earth

The United Nations highlights and urges Everyone: “Nature is suffering. Oceans are filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat, wildfires and floods have affected millions of people. Even these days, we are still trying to get back on track from COVID-19, a worldwide health pandemic linked to the health of our ecosystem.”

The Day recognises a collective responsibility, as called for in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the Earth and to achieve a just balance among the economic, social, and environmental needs of the present and future generations of humanity.  The UN General Assembly (UNGA) designated 22 April as International Mother Earth Day through resolution A/RES/63/278, adopted in 2009. Human-caused climate change is already affecting many global weather and climate extremes in every region. It has led to adverse impacts and related losses and damages to nature and people.

CHARM-EU’s commitment to working towards sustainable, inclusive societies.

CHARM-EU is creating an innovative university model aligning with CHARM-EU’s vision and mission. SGDs are deeply embedded into CHARM-EU’s and its Master’s in “Global Challenges for Sustainability”. CHARM-EU acknowledges everyone’s role to exercise active listening and to create change in our societies in response to the messages of Mother Earth. Only joint efforts will enable us to seek local and global human rights-based and intersectional solutions to protect livelihoods for all lives on Earth.

Education is one of the foundations for progress. Some of the various CHARM-EU tools are to conduct research, facilitate the exchange of knowledge, create a space for respectful discourse and critical thinking, develop skills and shape attitudes to become more aware of societal and global challenges. Fostering individuals to become global citizens who are socially and environmentally conscious is one of the engines for advancing just, sustainable laws and policies and accelerating to implementation of small and bigger solutions and practices. It is crucial to be fluent and meaningfully acting in alignment with the 17 goals in harmony with concepts of the transversal value, “Leave no one behind (LNOB)”, of SGDs. It is a central, unequivocal commitment of all UN Member States to eradicate poverty in all its forms, end discrimination and exclusion, and reduce the inequalities and vulnerabilities that leave people behind and undermine the potential of individuals and humanity.
