3 December 2021| International Day of Persons with Disabilities

This year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities theme is “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world”. It raises awareness of societies’ structural barriers which hinder access and participation for persons with disabilities in many spheres of life, including stepping into leadership positions.

“Nothing about us without us” means that no policies or practices should be decided without the meaningful participation of individuals and groups across society, including persons with disabilities. Co-creating with persons with disabilities and empowering them to take leadership positions in multiple spheres of life is essential to break structural barriers and to meet all the Sustainable Development Goals to shape an inclusive, sustainable future.

#NoOneLeftBehind is not only connected to the 2030 Agenda but relevant in other areas as well. It is everyone’s responsibility to reflect and act on how to include those who are often excluded from leadership positions and decision-making processes, policies, and practices. Now is the time to create an Inclusive CHARM-EU and a European Higher Education Area by having meaningful collaborations, encompassing all voices, individuals and stakeholders with their own lived experiences, backgrounds, and access needs.
