DESCRIPTION:This event is organised by the European Parliament\, not CHARM-
 EU. You can find more information on their website here. Academic freedom
  is widely recognised as a key condition for the functioning of open and d
 emocratic societies that adhere to the rule of law. Similarly\, full reali
 sation of academic freedom is unlikely when these values are being challen
 ged. At the times when academic freedom and trust in science gradually ero
 de in Europe\, this annual STOA conference focuses on the relationship bet
 ween academic freedom and democracy\, as well as policy initiatives that s
 upport these values.The conference will allow policy makers and scholars d
 iscuss the following questions: What is the role of academic freedom in de
 mocracy? What are the policies and policy initiatives that acknowledge the
 ir relationship and support them? What trends do we observe in the state o
