SUMMARY:2nd Workshop - Citizen Science and Libraries: gameful and innovative approaches
DESCRIPTION:Scope\nWe will explore gameful and innovative approaches from Citizen Science projects that could be promoted by academic libraries\, addressing both theoretical and practical perspectives. \nThe aim is twofold: to promote Citizen Science and to increase user engagement with academic libraries. Librarians\, researchers\, and all interested participants are warmly invited to join the workshop. Short presentations\, a hands-on activity\, and a concluding discussion will encourage collective learning and shared reflection. \nOrganisers\nCitizen Science Working Group of the Professional Development Institute (Institut de Desenvolupament Professional-UB) and especially Núria Bonada (FEHM-Lab\, Faculty of Biology)\, Isabelle Bonhoure (OpenSystems research group\, Faculty of Pyhysics and Faculty of Information and Audiovisual Media)\, Montserrat Llasat-Botija (GAMA research group\, Physics Faculty) and Ignasi Labastida\, (Head of the Research Unit at CRAI) \nThis workshop builds on the first workshop\, “Citizen Science and Libraries: What’s Next?”\, which took place in March 2025 within the framework of the Open Urban Sustainability Hubs (OPUSH) European project. \n \n Find more information\, resources and readings\n \n\n\n Schedule\n \n \n \n10h-10h10: Welcome by organisers \n10h10-10h45: Designing Gameful Participation in GLAM Citizen Science: From Motivation Theory to Implementation. Tomislav Ivanjko (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences\, University of Zagreb). \n\nThe seminar explores how gameful approaches (ranging from “games with a purpose” to lightweight gamification layers added to existing platforms) can increase motivation\, retention\, and learning in GLAM citizen science.\nThe seminar links design choices to established motivation theory\, particularly self-determination theory\, distinguishing autonomy-\, competence-\, and relatedness-supportive features from purely extrinsic incentive schemes.\nIt addresses specific mechanics (clear goals\, onboarding and scaffolding\, progressive task difficulty\, feedback loops\, badges and milestones\, narratives\, and social features such as teams or peer recognition) and explains how these mechanics shape participation dynamics\, such as sustained contribution\, collaboration\, and constructive competition.\n\n  \n10h45-11h: Questions and Answers. \n11h-13h: Gameful and Innovative approaches in Citizen Science projects \n11h-11h30: Short cases presentations \n11h-11h10: Reading Rivers (Llegim el Riu): an institutionalization of a citizen science project in public libraries and local environmental offices. Núria Bonada (FEHM-Lab\, Faculty of Biology) \n11h10-11h20: Heat Chronicles project (Cròniques de la Calor): libraries as headquarters and community hubs for urban heat research. Isabelle Bonhoure (OpenSystems research group\, Faculty of Physics and Faculty of Information and Audiovisual Media) \n11h20-11h30: I-CHANGE. Tools for the collective action against climate change and the case of the serious game “Our climate story”. Montserrat Llasat-Botija (GAMA research group\, Physics Faculty) \n11h30-13h00: Hands-on activities. The participants will be divided into three groups and will have the opportunity to perform a real testing of all three projects of 30 mins each. At the end of each testing\, they will collaboratively reflect on the possibility to implement such type of projects in academic libraries (e.g. CRAI at the UB). \n13h-13h30: Discussion and closing. The findings of the three testing groups will be shared\, and a collective discussion will be fostered to brainstorm of future implementation or co-creation of citizen science projects in academic libraries (e.g. CRAI at the UB). \n\n10h-10h10: Welcome by organisers \n10h10-10h45: Designing Gameful Participation in GLAM Citizen Science: From Motivation Theory to Implementation. SUMMARY:CHARM ON #7: Reimagining the Classroom: Hybrid Teaching in International Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:How can universities create meaningful learning experiences when students and teachers are no longer confined to a single classroom or location? \nThis CHARM ON session focuses on Hybrid Teaching and examines how higher education is adapting to increasingly connected and flexible forms of learning. Bringing together perspectives from across the CHARM-EU community\, the discussion will explore how hybrid formats can support interaction\, participation\, and international exchange between learners and educators in both physical and digital spaces. Rather than treating hybrid teaching purely as a technological question\, the session asks what kinds of pedagogy\, communication\, and learning environments are needed to make these formats engaging\, inclusive\, and sustainable in the long term. \n  Date: Monday\, 1 June  Time: 13:00–14:00 CET Format: Online panel discussion with Q&A \nJoin CHARM ON #7 here\nPlease notice your: Privacy notice! \nEach CHARM ON features a moderated panel with voices from across our university community (educators\, researchers\, students\, and support staff) sharing concrete experiences that bring CHARM-EU’s approaches to life. Together\, they connect principles to practice\, point to good examples in our Service Portfolio\, and signpost trainings and follow-up opportunities offered by the Alliance. \nCHARM ON will take place on the last Monday of each month at 13:00 CET\, offering a regular space to share ideas\, practices\, and impact stories across the CHARM-EU community. \nJoin CHARM ON #7 here\n \n Cengiz Hakan AYDIN\n \n \n Clémentine COLOMER(UM)\n \n \n Robert GRAY(UiB)\n \n \n Nataliia LAZEBNA(JMU)\n \nCengiz Hakan AYDIN\, PhD\, has offered courses in the fields of open and distance learning\, educational communications and technology\, and designing learning processes\, experiences\, media. SUMMARY:Cooperation with China: Developing Competences and Structures in European Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:28–29 September 2026\n University of Würzburg\, Germany\n \n \n Register Now\n \nScientific cooperation between European universities and partners in the People’s Republic of China continues to play an important role across disciplines. At the same time\, academic collaboration increasingly unfolds within a complex geopolitical and regulatory environment. Universities are expected to navigate evolving policy frameworks\, heightened public scrutiny\, and questions of institutional responsibility\, while safeguarding academic freedom\, research integrity and international openness. \nAgainst this backdrop\, the China Competence Centre of the University of Würzburg and the KoWinChi project (Interacting Competently with China in Science) — a joint programme of the University of Würzburg and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg\, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research\, Technology and Space — invite participants from across Europe to exchange experiences and reflect together on institutional approaches to cooperation with China. \nOver the past two years\, the KoWinChi project has worked closely with researchers and administrative staff at German universities to strengthen awareness\, institutional sensitivity and informed engagement in academic cooperation with China. With this conference\, we would like to continue the discussion within the broader European context\, creating space for comparative perspectives and shared reflection on institutional approaches\, governance practices\, and academic engagement. \nThe conference will address the following themes: \n\nEuropean messaging towards China: interpretations and impact\nManaging collaboration with China: institutional approaches\nRisk management in academic cooperation with China\nWillkommenskultur: making international students feel welcome\n\n  \nThe first day will feature analytical and practice-oriented panels\, bringing together university leadership\, researchers\, administrators\, and policy actors engaged in European–China academic cooperation. The second day will take the form of interactive workshops aimed at identifying best practices\, governance models\, and potential avenues for future European exchange and collaboration. \nRegistration includes access to this exclusive round of discussions\, as well as nutrition and refreshments throughout the conference. Participation is free of charge. Secure your spot by completing the registration form available here. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to Germany in September 2026!

SUMMARY:CHARM-EU Annual Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:In an era of accelerating geopolitical\, technological\, and environmental crisis\, what is the anchor that prevents our societies from drifting apart? This question lies at the heart of the CHARM-EU Annual Conference 2026. As we face disruptions that test our social fabric\, we recognize that true resilience depends on foundational values—democracy\, trust\, and inclusion. These values underpin resilient societies and enable constructive dialogue and collective action in times of crisis. \nEuropean University Alliances are uniquely positioned to protect these values by serving as long-term\, systemic spaces for democratic learning and practice. By integrating innovative governance\, transdisciplinary research\, and deep engagement with our cities and regions\, we are moving beyond traditional education to build sustainable welfare societies. At the conference\, we will gather to explore how our transnational cooperation can act as a platform for co-creation\, ensuring a resilient future for Europe and beyond. \nSessions will cover topics such as:  \n\nSocial Entrepreneurship\nTransdisciplinarity\nThe role of alliances in times of crises\nDemocratic values in the classroom\nOpen Science\nDemocracy labs\n\nVenue: Astra\, Porthaninkatu 3\, Turku\, Finland in an on-site format \nHow to arrive: https://share.google/Gm1ISsiOAo11s9cMO  \nFormat: On-site with partial live streaming. The morning pannel session will be live streamed on the CHARM-EU YouTube Channel. The rest of the conference is designed to be attended onsite only. \nHost of the CHARM-EU Annual Conference 2026: Åbo Akademi University \n \n Registrations opening soon\n \nPROGRAMME\nFull speaker lineup and detailed session abstracts are currently being finalized. Please check back for updates. \n\n\n Morning Sessions\n \n \n \n8:00 – 9:00 Registration & Coffee \n9:00 – 9:15 Opening by Rector Professor Gunilla Widén \nRector of host university ÅAU\, Professor Gunilla Widén\, welcomes the conference participants.  \n9:15 – 9:45 Universities as democratic actors \nKeynote Speech by ÅAU Professor Kimmo Grönlund \n9:45 – 10:45 From Mobility to Democratic resilience: The Role of European University alliances \nPanel Session \nEuropean University alliances are often framed as vehicles for mobility and institutional cooperation\, yet their potential role in supporting democratic values remains underdeveloped. In a context of growing political fragmentation across Europe\, this panel examines how alliances can move beyond exchange formats such as Erasmus+ and contribute to democratic resilience.  \n10:45 – 11:15 Coffee Break \n11:15 – 11:30 Energizer \n11:30 – 12:15 Design processes and initiatives for promoting sustainability leadership\, civic engagement and inclusive mindset: the REDINEST Impact Labs  \nInteractive Lecture \nGet inspired by the story of a journey that transformed the entrepreneurship education for computer science students into an international level interdisciplinary and impactful initiative: educational methods\, goals\, achievements\, and activities for a student-powered and challenge-based impact lab network for the development of transformative competencies and inclusive mindset. Share your thoughts and ideas on creating cross-subject\, cross-faculty and cross-institutional learning opportunities that form sustainability leadership and civic engagement skills of future changemakers.  \nLecturer: \n\nDr. Barbara Hegyi (ELTE)\n\n  \n12:15 – 12:30 Group Picture \n12:30 – 13:30 Lunch \n\n\n\n Afternoon Sessions\n \n \n \n13:30 – 15:00 Workshops – parallel sessions \n \n Workshop 1\n \n \n Workshop 2\n \n \n Workshop 3\n \n \n Workshop 4\n \n \n Workshop 5\n \n \n Workshop 6&7\n \nSocial Entrepreneurship: Building Solutions for Resilient Communities  \nHow can we turn academic ideas into tools for societal welfare? This workshop explores the link between innovation and social impact. Participants will work in small groups to “pitch” a solution to a local community challenge\, focusing on how entrepreneurship can support democratic values like equity and inclusion.  \nHow to make your research or teaching methodologies more transdisciplinar? \nMoving from theory to practice\, this session explores how researchers and teachers can adapt their projects/work on a more transdisciplinar way of doing things. \nFrom Inclusion to Resilience: European University Alliances in times of crises  \nIn recent years\, universities and alliances have had to respond to different types of crises: social inequalities\, mental health issues\, migration\, political tensions\, climate-related challenges and increasing mistrust towards institutions.  At the same time\, European University Alliances are becoming long-term cooperation structures with the capacity to connect universities\, local stakeholders and communities across borders.  This workshop would like to explore a simple question: beyond academic cooperation\, how can alliances connect and support people and communities in times of crisis?  The workshop would also be an opportunity to exchange experiences between alliances and reflect collectively on what could realistically be developed together in the future.  \n  \nCHARM-EU Values in the Classroom: Practical Methods    \nHow do we “teach” democracy? This session is for educators and students to share tools for bringing CHARM-EU values into the curriculum. We will explore how to facilitate difficult conversations and ensure that “Challenge-Based Learning” remains rooted in respect and fundamental rights.  \nOpen Science Made Simple: Sharing Knowledge for a Stronger Society  \nOpen Science is often seen as a technical hurdle\, but it is a democratic tool. This workshop provides a “starter kit” for researchers to make their work open and transparent. We will discuss the benefits of sharing data and how it builds public trust in science and democratic institutions.  \nIn the democratic lab: live deliberative experiment \nThe results of this experiment (including an analysis based on the questionnaires) will be presented with the closing remarks in 10-15 minutes. \nChair: \n\nIsak Vento (ÅAU)\n\n15:00 – 15:30 Coffee Break \n15:30 – 16:00 Poster Session \nThe poster session will be a space where members of European University Alliances\, university staff\, students and external stakeholders can exchange ideas and discuss the posters.  \n16:00 – 16:15 Interactive Quiz \nCultural interactive quiz with questions from CHARM-EU universities\, cities\, countries\, traditions\, music\, food\, culture in general\, football\, etc. \n16:15 – 17:00 Closing Remarks \n\n\n\n Evening Programme\n \n \n \n17:15 – 19:00 Cocktail with musical elements \n\n8:00 – 9:00 Registration & Coffee \n9:00 – 9:15 Opening by Rector Professor Gunilla Widén \nRector of host university ÅAU\, Professor Gunilla Widén\, welcomes the conference participants. \n16:15 – 17:00 Closing Remarks \n17:15 – 19:00 Cocktail with musical elements
